I’m starting to plan a trip in May, to the parc des Volcans D’Auvergne. A few days camping. I thought I might start at Monts du Cantal and possibly go on to Monts Dore. I shall travel into the region from the Limoges direction.
If anyone has toured this area, any advice or tips would be gratefully received. Anyone camped in the area?
Having read Dave R’s ‘Auvergne Blast’, I might take his route into the area.

Sounds great, especially as you have put aside a few days. I did 540km in a day of frantic thrashing about, so you'll see far more. If you follow some of my route, when you get to Mauriac I suggest take the road to Condat, then Puy De Sancy and then to Mont Dore, and onwards to Puy de Dome. I didn't have time to go that way in one day's ride, but that's where the serious volcanos are.

Thanks Dave, Andy
I won't be doing any 'frantic thrashing', I shall take the Bonneville (probably take me a week to get there!!)
Have been looking at a few possible campsites, I quite like the Municipal ones - basic and cheap!

This trip is to be postponed until September, due to various reasons.
I’m planning on going Mon 6 Sept or the first 3/4 days, after that, of dry weather.
Staying at Camping Municipal de Murat. http://www.camping-murat.com/
If anyone is interested in joining this trip/tour, then your 'imput' would be most welcome

Looks good Simon, I'll give a provisional yes tho not sure how I'll get my portaloo on the bike
Are you planning to turn up without booking, ie. go for it when the weather's fair?
It'll be good to see your Bonnie too.

I'm off on a weeks holiday on the 11th with 'er indoors, so it might be a bit tight. I'll try and make a couple of days though.

Looks like we have a camping tour!
Schools go back the previous week, so we take the first 3/4 days of dry weather from mon 6 sept, won't need to book in advance at that time in the season (just the previous day)

That's great simon, so.. this camping thingy, what does it entail, I'm very broadminded but I do have my limits.

Its all about lying on a 'blow-up' mattress and waiting for it to slowly deflate.

This is how it works;
You need;
a tent
Good sleeping material – ie. A good mattress (no grumbling on this tour) plus bag/duvet etc..
We need at least a couple of stoves (I’ve got one) billy cans/ kettle (for brew) tea mugs, beer/wine glass bit of crockery and cutlery
A good sharp knife or laguiole is essential, as we will be eating mountain food, crusty heavy bread (Ah, I hear you say, we could go to Figeac for that ), hard cheese and cured sausage
We might take a meal at a restaurant, and/or use a BBQ.
A good idea, is a folding chair (Decathalon sell ones that fold up small.)
The optimum is, 3 nights in a tent, which gives 2 days for exploring. One of the days we could head towards the road past the Puy Mary (Highest volcano), then the other day, perhaps towards Mont Dore – But all that to be researched.
Anyone still interested?
